What UK buyers should ask Unbounce, Instapage and Leadpages
Landing page builder checks for UK buyers of Unbounce, Instapage and Leadpages: sterling quote, VAT line, UK-time support and lead-data terms in writing.
Landing page builder comparison UK: this guide sets out what Unbounce, Instapage and Leadpages leave you to check before you pay — the currency the invoice is raised in, the VAT treatment, the support window stated in UK time, and where the form data sits and which transfer tool covers it leaving the UK.
What to take away
- Unbounce, Instapage and Leadpages do similar work, so the UK choice turns on billing currency, VAT, support hours and where lead data sits.
- None of the three publishes a sterling price list, so your cost is a figure you request in writing at your own seat count and page volume.
- VAT on a business-to-business software service bought from an overseas supplier normally goes through the reverse charge at the 20% standard rate.
- Your business is the data controller for every lead the form collects, whatever the builder's terms say.
- Shortlist on page volume and support need, not on a feature grid.
How billing and VAT work for UK buyers
None of the three publishes a sterling price list, so the cheapest option depends on the quote you get at your own seat count and page volume.
The table below separates what you pay for from where it lands.
What it covers
- Subscription
- Plan tier, quoted in US dollars
- VAT
- 20% standard rate on a B2B service
- Seats and caps
- Named users, visitors, pages
- Exit
- Export of the lead list
How it lands for a UK buyer
- Subscription
- Converts at the card rate, so the pound cost moves
- VAT
- Reverse charge: account for it, reclaim if entitled
- Seats and caps
- Ask for the limits, not the plan name
- Exit
- Confirm the format before you build
Two VAT positions matter. A VAT-registered business buying from an overseas supplier accounts for 20% on its return and reclaims the same amount as input tax, so the cash effect is often nil. Below the £90,000 registration threshold you are not registered, so the converted dollar figure is your whole cost.
Which position applies turns on the invoicing entity, so have it named on the quote. A UK entity charges VAT at 20% on the invoice, and you reclaim the same amount as input tax; an overseas entity raises no UK VAT line, and you account for the reverse charge instead.
Plan tiers and bundles are revised often, so ask each vendor for its current tier names, the seat, page and visitor caps attached to them, and the price, in writing, rather than working from a snapshot of the landing page software pricing models.
Ask six things before a trial converts to a paid plan:
- A quote in pounds sterling for your seat count, page volume and visitor cap.
- The invoicing entity, and whether UK VAT appears on the invoice or goes through the reverse charge.
- What the price does at renewal, and whether the annual plan renews automatically.
- The data processing agreement and its subprocessor list.
- The seat, page and visitor cap each tier includes, and what happens when a page or a form goes past one.
- The support hours the plan promises, stated in UK time rather than in the vendor's local time.
Support hours in UK time, and the escalation route
All three support desks run on North American business hours, so the overlap with your working day is short. A desk opening at 9am Pacific reaches UK buyers at 5pm, summer or winter, and each time zone to the east brings that forward by an hour.
A form that stops delivering leads at 4pm on a Friday is a revenue problem, and a general ticket queue is rarely built to treat it as one.
Ask for the escalation route in the contract: the queue a failed form enters, the response target attached to it, and a named contact outside standard hours. That answer is part of what you buy.
Where your lead data sits, and who else can reach it
The page builder supplies the form, and your business becomes the controller of what it collects. The Data Protection Act 2018 and the UK GDPR set the framework for that role, covering lawful basis, the rights of the people on your list, and the transfer rules that apply when form data leaves the UK.
Who is responsible for what
- Page builder supplies the form
- Your business is the controller
- Lawful basis and consent are yours
- Download consent is not email consent
- Keep an audit trail of consent
Data residency is a contract term, not a checkout option. The hosting region and the subprocessors that touch form data appear in the data processing agreement and its annex. Our checklist for lead capture forms and GDPR consent covers the consent side of the same form.
Where the vendor stores or processes data outside the UK, the contract needs a transfer tool, not just a hosting region. The two UK routes are the International Data Transfer Agreement and the International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Commission standard contractual clauses, in force since 21 March 2022. Unbounce is a Canadian company headquartered in Vancouver, so its path out of the UK runs through the subprocessors named under it.
Consent wording matters as much as storage. ICO guidance on consent covers the opt-in text and the record you keep of how consent was given.
Cookie and email rules sit alongside that. The ICO hub on direct marketing and electronic communications covers non-essential cookies firing before consent, plus the follow-up emails a campaign triggers.
What to get in writing from Unbounce, Instapage and Leadpages
| Vendor | Where the company is based | Price you can see | VAT on a UK invoice | Support in UK time | Lead data |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unbounce | Canada | Dollar list price, sterling by quote | Reverse charge at 20% if you are registered | Ask for the window | Set in the data processing agreement |
| Instapage | United States | Dollar list price, sterling by quote | Reverse charge at 20% if you are registered | Ask for the window | Set in the data processing agreement |
| Leadpages | United States | Dollar list price, sterling by quote | Reverse charge at 20% if you are registered | Ask for the window | Set in the data processing agreement |
The comparison you can act on is the four written answers: the quote in pounds, the invoicing entity and the VAT line, the UK-time support window, and the hosting region and subprocessors named in the data processing agreement.
The same four answers decide with any other builder you add to the shortlist, whether that is Wix, Webflow or a WordPress builder such as Elementor, so the three names here stay comparable with the rest of the market.
Which of the three to shortlist
Match on two figures you can put a number on yourself: pages published a year, and the revenue that depends on a page converting visitor from bought traffic.
Shortlist first
- Few pages a year, small team, no developer
- Leadpages
- Paid traffic where the page carries the campaign
- Instapage
- Testing and copy variation at volume
- Unbounce
Why
- Few pages a year, small team, no developer
- Template-led build gets a page live quickly
- Paid traffic where the page carries the campaign
- Built around converting bought traffic and page-level personalisation
- Testing and copy variation at volume
- Testing sits inside the builder, alongside AI-assisted copy
These are starting points, not verdicts. Run your own page and the same traffic through each trial, and read our notes on A/B testing landing pages before you decide which result counts.
Common questions
Do Unbounce, Instapage and Leadpages charge UK customers in pounds?
All three quote list prices in US dollars; whether the invoice is raised in sterling depends on the selling entity and your billing address.
Which is cheapest for a UK business paying in pounds?
No sterling answer is published. Compare written quotes at the same seat count and page volume, then apply the reverse charge.
Can my lead data stay in the UK?
Hosting region and subprocessors are set in the data processing agreement, so confirm UK-only storage before you send paid traffic if it is a hard requirement. If the data lands in the United States or Canada, the contract also needs a UK transfer tool — the International Data Transfer Agreement or the ICO's Addendum.
Do I need a cookie banner on these pages?
Yes, where a page sets non-essential cookies or tracking tags, and consent must be collected before those cookies fire.
