How to review landing page software with the unknowns kept in plain sight
A rigorous way to review landing page software for an England buyer, compare like with like and keep unknown product evidence clearly visible.
What to take away
- Fix the decision statement before opening any supplier pageorganisation, page, visitors, data collected, operators and decision date.
- Rank contractual records above marketing pages, because published claims are not independent proof of performance.
- Run one synthetic journey across every candidate and the current manual baseline, using fictional data only.
- No winner, price or tested result appears hereno account, trial, page or export was tested, and no England order basis was normalised.
Records were reopened on 6 September 2026, the evidence cut-off. No supplier funding or affiliate relationship is recorded.
Fix the decision statement first
Write one short statement before comparing products. Name the organisation, the page, its visitors, the data collected, the publishing domain, the operators and the decision date.
Add constraints that rule options in or out: control of DNS, a required export format, agency use, restricted personal data or a public-sector accessibility duty.
Treat the current process as one candidate. Test it with the same journey check, staff-time record and risk review as a supplier product.
The baseline rows are set out in selecting landing page software with a manual baseline as the control.
Then fill the grid fields: required task, mandatory gates, desirable capabilities, the manual baseline, blank weights, evidence owner, expiry and approver.
Put records in an evidence hierarchy
Not every document answers the same question. Put executed or proposed contractual material at the top for commercial obligations: order form, plan schedule, data-processing terms and exit clauses.
Current first-party documentation comes next, then controlled buyer-side test records. Regulator guidance sets the control questions, not whether a supplier passed them.
Marketing pages sit lower for superiority claims. The ASA's substantiation guidance says objective claims capable of proof should be backed by documentary evidence before publication.
Reviews suggest questions; they are not a performance dataset.
Example: three grid rows filled with named products
Three grid rows filled with named products
| Grid row | What you fill | Worked note, 6 September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Legal counterparty, edition, billing route | Instapage publishes a builder, plans and service terms; England basis unknown |
| Plan limits | Limits kept apart from capabilities | Unbounce's plan page separates limits from capabilities; no price entered |
| Contracting entity | Named counterparty on the governing terms | Leadpages terms name Leadpages (US), Inc |
Unbounce, Leadpages and Instapage show published product, plan and terms records exist. Naming them does not create a like-for-like plan comparison.
Compare one journey across every candidate
Use identical rows for each candidate and the manual baseline. Do not reward a product because its documentation lists more features.
What to test
- Functional journey
- Draft to export
- Ownership and portability
- Domains, DNS, records, restore
- Data protection
- Consent, cookies, sub-processors
- Security and continuity
- Access, logging, backups
- Accessibility
- Keyboard, zoom, screen reader
- Commercial control
- Subscription, usage, migration, exit
Evidence to hold
- Functional journey
- Dated test record
- Ownership and portability
- Written export result
- Data protection
- Contract terms
- Security and continuity
- Configuration review
- Accessibility
- Defect log
- Commercial control
- Dated order form
Map purposes and roles in the configured journey before you sign. The ICO's direct marketing and PECR guidance covers email consent and cookies on landing pages.
Accessibility is a separate gate. The W3C WCAG 2.2 Recommendation gives testable criteria, but a supplier statement is not evidence that your template and form meet them.
Fill cost dimensions, without prices
Compare one period and one volume; leave fields blank until a dated record exists.
- Subscription
- currency, VAT treatment, plan, billing period, minimum term, seats.
- Usage
- visitor limits, overage rate, form submissions, email sends.
- Migration
- build hours, template rebuild, redirect mapping, tracking rework.
- Exit
- notice period, data return format, deletion confirmation, parallel running.
Track quote provenance as shown in a landing page software budget template with quote provenance.
Keep unknowns in plain sight
Four states cover everything you will meet: verified for stated scope, supplier-stated, not tested, unknown.
An unknown is not a zero. An unresolved mandatory gate holds the candidate rather than failing it.
A supplier-stated item may reach a shortlist. It cannot become independent proof because several supplier pages repeat it.
Write the scoring model before results, weighting only verified criteria.
Run the tests in a controlled sequence
- Inspect documents without creating an account.
- Send every shortlisted supplier the same dated question set.
- Agree a synthetic test with no production data, spend or public claim.
- Run the journey with representative operator and accessibility tasks.
- Rehearse export, deletion, rollback and incident contacts.
Stop if a supplier will not name the offered plan or legal counterparty, or if a specialist gate fails.
Review an agency route separately
An agency service is not the software. Check its legal identity, statement of work, staff access, account ownership and personal-data roles. A Companies House registration says nothing about delivery quality. Read how to review a landing page agency when the supplier evidence is not there yet.
Common questions
Which products should go on the grid first?
Start with your two or three shortlisted products, plus the manual baseline. Unbounce, Leadpages and Instapage each publish product, plan and terms records readable without an account.
Why is there no winner or price?
No account, trial, page or export was tested. Currency, tax, term and promotion were not normalised into one England order basis.
What makes an unknown different from a failure?
A failure missed your pass rule on a stated date; an unknown means no evidence was obtained, so the candidate is held, not rejected.
